Bloomsburg Baseball Splits Doubleheader With East Stroudsburg

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader against East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action held at Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg because of unplayable field conditions at East Stroudsburg. The Warriors won the first game 5-4 while Bloomsburg took game two 4-3.
In game one, the Huskies took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Allen (DuBoistown/South Williamsport) hit a two-run homerun that also scored Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner) who reached on a single. Bloomsburg stretched its lead to 3-0 when Ward knocked in David Miller (Penn Argly/Penn Argyl) on a groundout in the third inning,
The Huskies made it 4-0 in the fourth inning after Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) scored on a Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/Wyalusing Valley) single into left center field. However, East Stroudsburg put together a five-run fifth inning capped by a three-run homerun from Josh Butler. Bloomsburg threatened in the sixth and seventh but was unable to produce a run and the Warriors took game one, 5-4.
In game two, Bloomsburg fell behind 2-0 in the second inning when Blake Knecht hit a two-run homerun to put the Warriors on the board.
The score remained 2-0 until Bloomsburg rallied in the top of the fifth inning for four runs. Rich Letts (Parkesburg/Octoara) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Bucher. Paul Eckley (Port Matilda/State College) then loaded the bases with a walk. The Huskies tied the score at 2-2 when Miller reached on an error by the pitcher which scored Letts and Bucher. Bloomsburg took a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly from Vinnie James (Bristol/Bristol) and later stretched the lead to 4-2 on an RBI-single from Ward.
East Stroudsburg (12-9, 2-2 PSAC East) pulled to within one run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the ninth inning but Michael Griggs (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to give Bloomsburg (7-15, 2-2 PSAC East) the 4-3 win. David Rute (Milton/Milton) earned the win starting the game for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg will next travel to Susquehanna University for a non-conference game on April 3rd at 3:00 p.m.
